Councillor Barbara Mackenzie

Barbara Mackenzie
I have lived and worked in St Anne’s for the past nine years and in the Fylde on and off during the last 40 years. In between, I have lived and worked in Preston, Glasgow, Windsor, and abroad in Western New York. I am now settled here, as are several generations of my family, so I have a special interest in this community. I was a member of the steering committee that brought about the parishing of St Anne’s and have served on the Parish, now Town Council, since its inception in 2005. I led the council for four years, the last year as the town’s first Mayor, and I represent Central Ward. The Town Council has two committees with delegated powers: the planning committee, which assesses all planning applications for the area and passes on recommendations to the Borough Council; and the allotments committee, which meets regularly with the Shepherd Road Allotment Society representatives to ensure the smooth running of the plots. I am a member of both of these. I have an MA in History and am very interested in the history of St Anne’s. One of my wishes is to have a heritage centre in the town where residents and visitors alike can learn something about the area and I am on the lookout for suitable premises and artefacts people might be willing to give or lend. Please contact me if you can help. The Town Council is to produce a town plan which will, we hope, shape the town for the next few years the way the community wants. We can’t promise to please everyone but we do want to have your views. Residents sometimes ask what the Town Council has done. The most important thing is that it has given the townspeople a voice previously unheard by councils at borough and county level. Most of us are also involved either with groups that work with councils or community groups that help keep us in touch with what is going on locally. For example, I am Vice-Chairman of the Friends of the Library steering group, Chairman of the Lytham St Anne’s Twinning Association, Chairman of the Fylde Civic Awareness Group, and a regular attendee at my ward’s PACT (Police and Community Together) meetings. I am also one of three Fylde representatives on the executive committee of NALC (National Association of Local Councils) and on behalf of the Town Council, I attend the District/Parish liaison committee meetings and the Fylde Area committee meetings of LALC (Lancashire Association of Local Councils). In the future, following the governance review currently taking place, the Town Council should have more members, which means we will be able to serve you, the community, in an even more meaningful way.
