Who are the Fylde Civic Awareness Group?

The group formed in 2002 to explain the workings of local government to people wondering about standing for election to a local council. Our free seminars aimed to:
- explain what local government is all about; how priorities are decided, and what your money is spent on.
- encourage, equip, and support more people to take an active role in civic and community life, and to stand for election as a councillor if they wanted to.
271 people attended our 2006/07 seminars. Fourteen people stood for election who were not Councillors before the seminars. Six are now Borough Councillors, and two are Parish Councillors.
Recently, we evolved to act as an umbrella and support organisation for a range of groups in Fylde. Our aims here are:
- to encourage participation and foster co-operation between member groups;
- to share information and ideas, encourage alliances where appropriate; and,
- to provide support and experience to member groups without any loss of their autonomy
We have good links into local councils, and access to people who can explain what is going on behind the scenes of civic life.
As a not-for profit voluntary organisation, we are led by a delegate assembly representing each of our member groups. We also have a register of people who want to know about the public events we organise, the most recent of which was the “Save St Anne’s” meeting at the YMCA, hosted by the Saint Anne’s on the Sea Town Council.
We welcome membership enquiries from any group with an interest in the civic life of Fylde. We also offer free meetings, workshops and seminars to members of the public who register to receive details.
